Pierogi

Pierogi are semicircular dumplings made of unleavened dough, stuffed with a variety of fillings.
I've cooked pierogi a couple of times but have never attempted making them from scratch, because honestly, it is a lot of work, and I usually only go for quick and easy recipes.
I’ve had a box of pierogi sitting in my freezer for a couple of months now and I finally decided to make a meal of it yesterday.

Ingredients:
1 box (around 25-30) of frozen Pierogi (I like low fat cheddar and potato.)
2 Tbsp butter
3-4 cloves garlic, crushed1 onion, finely chopped
½ red bell pepper, diced
½ tsp red chilli flakes
A pinch of savory
Salt to taste

Method:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the frozen pierogi and cook for 3-5 minutes. Drain.

Melt the butter in a skillet. Add the garlic, chopped onions, savory, red chilli flakes and sauté till onions are translucent.

Add the diced red bell pepper and cook till tender.

Add the cooked pierogi and mix well into the skillet mixture.

Serve pierogi warm.

When I lived in Calgary there was a lady who made perogies from her home. She would make the flavours you wanted and as many dozen as your freezer could hold. Even after all these years and many...many perogies later hers are still the best I have ever tasted!!! They would have been delicious cooked your way :D

Aparna- I'd never heard of these either while I was there. I have been exposed to so many different cuisines since we came here.:-)

Vaishali- thank you! that is very sweet of you.:-)

Aarti- welcome! Are you in India? It is made of unleavened dough- dough made without the use of a leavening/rising agent like baking soda, baking powder, yeast etc... kind of like our rotis/chapatis etc. I do not know the proportions of flour used though, since I bought the pre-made ones. Sorry that I couldn't be of more help.:-(

Jessica and Nathan- welcome and thanks for stopping by! :-) BTW, what is MIB?

Seema- thank you. Give it a shot. it takes all of 10 minutes!:-)

Pierogi are like so many other dumplings, the ultimate in comfort food. Nice simple sauce you have made for them. I love them, but have never made them from scratch. I used to live in a Polish neighborhood that had a little shop where they made up batches everyday. Now I want to go back and see if they are still in business. : )
